About us

About Stauffer & Sons

A family-run, design-build home builder in Colorado Springs — founded by Andy Stauffer in 1999 and still small enough that Andy is in the room from first sketch to final walk-through.

30+years of building experience behind every home
6–8select homes a year, each one personally vetted

The name

We, Stauffer & Sons.

The name is literal: Andy, his wife Yukie, and their four sons are the family it’s named for. The boys grew up around job sites — and then, the way life goes, each went off to college and out into the world to find a path of his own. None of them builds houses in the family business today, and honestly, that’s become our favorite part of the story: almost nothing turns out exactly the way you first drew it. Mostly, it turns out better.

We’ve come to think about homes the same way. The house you finish with is never quite the one on the napkin sketch — it’s the one your family actually grows into.

“We’ve lived in the same home for years, and I’ve always loved the idea of pushing my grandchildren on the same swing I pushed my children. To the extent I can help somebody else achieve that, I’m all in.” — Andy

Who you're hiring

You’re hiring Andy Stauffer — not a sales office.

Andy learned the trades hands-on, remodeling Victorian homes in Northern California before moving to Colorado Springs and founding Stauffer & Sons in 1999. More than three decades into his building career, he still meets with clients himself, leads the design of every home, and stays involved through construction. The result is a builder chosen for judgment rather than for the lowest bid — someone who will tell you early and honestly whether a project is right, and whether we’re the right team to build it.

The people beside him on every home.

A lot of good people have worked alongside Andy over the years — some of them former project managers who now run successful building companies of their own in the Colorado Springs area. The people below are the ones who found their place at Stauffer & Sons and have been building with Andy for a long time. When you hire us, these are the people you’ll actually work with.

  • Sam Friesema outdoors at dusk with trees and a hillside behind him

    Sam Friesema

    Senior Designer

Sam has worked in architecture and building since 2004 and holds degrees in both architecture and urban design. His award-winning work has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects and the Urban Land Institute, among others. He now focuses on custom residential and infill projects, and he especially enjoys design-build — where design decisions, budgets, materials, and construction stay connected from the first sketch through the finished home. A husband and father, Sam is drawn to homes that respond to the way families actually live.

  • Bryce Harmon in a Stauffer & Sons work shirt, standing beside a stone fireplace on a job site

    Bryce Harmon

    Partner, Operations

Bryce first walked onto a Stauffer & Sons job site more than twenty years ago. He showed up early for the interview, asked to get up on the roof and start framing, and by the time Andy arrived he had already cleaned and organized the yard. He was hired on the spot and started that day. In the years since he has built high-end commercial work in Denver — hospitals, airports, tenant finishes — and come back to residential to build alongside Andy, in a leading role for more than six years now. Today Bryce runs the build day to day. He grew up in Lamar, in a family that has been in Colorado for generations. The Harmon family includes his wife Monica, a son who is a firefighter in Pueblo, and a daughter who keeps everyone busy with sports.

Along the way, we built the first LEED Platinum-certified home in Southern Colorado, took part in ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and did restoration work at Colorado landmarks including The Broadmoor and Venetucci Farms.

One year after the 2013 Black Forest fire, the community dedicated the New Log School Park pavilion, which the Black Forest Community Foundation hired us to build as a gathering place for the neighbors who had lost the most homes. Then-Governor John Hickenlooper came for the dedication and recognized Andy for the rebuilding work.

Small on purpose

The people you meet early see your home through.

We keep the team deliberately small — six to eight select homes a year — so the people you meet in the first conversation are the people who see your home through, and so you’re treated less like a contract and more like family. A custom home is a long relationship, and we build for the years you’ll spend living in it.

What it's like to work with us

About us, answered

Who is Stauffer & Sons?

A family-run, design-build custom home builder in Colorado Springs, founded by Andy Stauffer in 1999. The same team designs and builds each home, and Andy stays personally involved from the first conversation through move-in.

What kind of work are you known for?

Custom homes across the Front Range in a wide range of styles, with one specialty few builders share: timber frame homes, with a crew that fabricates and raises heavy-timber frames constantly — for our own homes and for other builders. Alongside that, historic restoration and rebuilding homes lost to Colorado wildfires. Our work has included the first LEED Platinum-certified home in Southern Colorado and restoration work at Colorado landmarks.

Every intro call ends one of three ways

  1. 1We hit it off and start talking design.
  2. 2I tell you honestly what kind of builder you actually need and point you to someone in my network — so you don't have to vet 20 builders.
  3. 3It's too early, and I give you homework.

Either way, you get 30 years of building distilled into 30 minutes.
