Building in Woodland Park

The land shapes the home.

Up Ute Pass and into Teller County — Woodland Park, Divide, Florissant, Green Mountain Falls, and Cascade — the land climbs toward 8,000 feet and above. The mountain setting is the whole point of building here, and it’s also what makes building here different from the plains below.

Altitude means real snow loads, so roofs and structure are engineered for the weight; it means freeze protection for water and drainage; and it means a shorter, weather-driven build season we plan around. Most lots are on well and septic, and access — grade, snow, getting equipment and materials to the site — is part of the plan from day one.

Our approach doesn’t change with elevation: we read the site, design to the mountain conditions and your budget, and keep one team accountable from first walk to final walk-through.

What it's like to work with us

We knew that building our house in the Colorado mountains while still living in Illinois would be a challenge. We went through a list of builders and found Stauffer & Sons Construction. After meeting with Andy Stauffer for an hour or so, we decided that he had the company we would trust to build our home. Stauffer & Sons’ Project Manager, Mike, was full of energy and kept us up to date with emails and photos of what was happening. He made the building process easy and fun. All of the trades that worked for Stauffer & Sons did a great job. The workmanship was excellent. I would not think twice about hiring them again!

I enjoyed my interaction with Stauffer & Sons and I particularly enjoyed the value engineering aspects of their approach. I liked interacting with the superintendent on the job site and their responsiveness to our concerns. I chose to work with Stauffer & Sons because of their professional approach and approach to value engineering. The distressed wood is my favorite aspect.

Building in Woodland Park — common questions

How does building at altitude in Teller County differ from the Springs?

The big three are snow load, freeze protection, and the build season. Roofs and structure are engineered for mountain snow loads, water and drainage are detailed against hard freezes, and we sequence the schedule around mountain weather. Most sites are also well-and-septic, which we plan alongside access and grading.

Can you build on steep or hard-to-access mountain lots?

Often yes — but the site drives a lot of the design and cost. Grade, access for equipment, and where the well, septic, and driveway can go all factor in. We’d rather assess that with you before you commit to a lot.

What it's like to work with us

One team, wherever your land is.

No matter which region your lot is in, the way we work is the same: one team designing and building your home, reading the site before we draw, and staying with you from the first conversation to the final walk-through. See how we design and build →

Every intro call ends one of three ways

  1. 1We hit it off and start talking design.
  2. 2I tell you honestly what kind of builder you actually need and point you to someone in my network — so you don't have to vet 20 builders.
  3. 3It's too early, and I give you homework.

Either way, you get 30 years of building distilled into 30 minutes.
