Building in Colorado Springs From Out of State
Own land here, or looking at some, but don't live in Colorado yet? We'll be your boots on the ground. And if you'd like a home base while you're in town, we have one.
Boots on the ground
You don’t have to live here yet for us to walk your land.
A lot of the people we build for aren’t in Colorado when they start. Some already own land near Colorado Springs. Others are still deciding on a lot. Either way, tell us where it is and we’ll go look.
You already own land here
We’ll walk it and tell you what we see.
Send us the address. We’ll look at where a house wants to sit, how it’s reached, the slope, the trees, the soils, and what a well and septic are likely to involve. You’ll hear what it will take to build there before anything is drawn.
You’re still looking at land
Let us see it before you close.
What’s under the surface and how a lot is reached drive what’s possible and what it costs. Those are hard to judge from a listing two states away. We’d rather help you evaluate a site than design around a problem you didn’t know you were buying.

A place to stay
A home base in Black Forest, built by Andy.
If you’re coming to look at land, you’ll need somewhere to stay. We have a place. You don’t have to use it for us to walk your land; that offer stands either way.

Our family has lived on this treed five-acre property in Black Forest for twenty-five years. When Andy reworked it, he designed and built a two-bedroom guest house above the detached garage, a short walk from the main house, so the kids would have a place to stay when they visit. The rest of the year it hosts guests, and it’s where our out-of-state clients stay.
Use it while you look at land, and come back to it when you’re in town to check on your build. You’ll also be spending a few nights inside a home Andy designed and built.
- The house
- Two bedrooms, three beds, sleeps six. Full kitchen and a gas fireplace.
- Outside
- A covered patio up in the tree canopy with a private hot tub, on two treed acres.
- To stay
- Tell Andy when you’re coming. He holds dates for clients and sets up the stay himself.
From a distance
We work with out-of-state clients all the time.
Design meetings work over a shared screen. We go through the budget with you line by line. Through the build, you always know who to call and where the project stands.
Still, nothing matches being here in person as often as you can: standing on the land, walking the framing, choosing finishes with your own eyes. That’s what the guest house is for.
In their words
Clients who built from somewhere else
My husband and I live in Florida, and we purchased thirty-eight acres of land in Cuchara (Southern Colorado) seven years ago. We decided that we really wanted a custom-built timber frame home on our property, and after investigating General Contractors on the Internet and in magazines, we came out to Denver to attend a Log and Timber Home Show where we met Stauffer & Sons Construction. Stauffer & Sons was able to take our ideas and desires and design the perfect home for us. Andy Stauffer was always responsive to our questions and, using his experience, helped us get the maximum timber frame look while staying within our budget. Our Project Manager, Mike, was also a great asset in keeping the project on schedule and making sure the work was done right. Our home is warm, well constructed, and has that “WOW” factor of huge timbers, a great view, and a large, open feel to it.
Building from out of state, answered
Can you build my home while I live in another state?
Yes. We work with out-of-state clients all the time. Design meetings work over a shared screen, we go through the budget with you line by line, and during the build you always know who to call and where the project stands. Nothing matches being here in person as often as you can, so we make that easy too.
I already own land near Colorado Springs but don't live there yet. What's the first step?
Book a call and tell us where the land is. We'll walk the property and tell you what we see: where a house wants to sit, how it's reached, the slope, the trees, the soils, and what a well and septic are likely to involve.
Can you look at land for me before I buy it?
Yes, and it's some of the most valuable work we do. What's under the surface and how a lot is reached drive what's possible and what it costs, and those are hard to judge from a listing. We'd rather help you evaluate a site before you close than design around a problem you didn't know you were buying.
Do I have to stay at the guest house to work with you?
No. The offer to walk your land stands whether or not you ever stay with us. The guest house is there if a home base would help while you're in town.
How do I stay at the guest house?
Tell Andy when you're coming. He holds dates for clients and sets up the stay himself. The house is also listed on Airbnb, where anyone can read the reviews.
Can I stay there again when I come to check on my build?
Yes. That's a big part of why we offer it. Clients building from out of state use it as their place to come back to through design and construction.
